Operate concrete agitator trucks


Application

This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate concrete agitator trucks in support of construction projects.

It includes:

planning and preparing for work

conducting operational checks

safely and effectively operating a concrete agitator truck and associated equipment

positioning the vehicle at the load point

loading and transporting concrete

discharging concrete at work site

applying emergency procedures

conducting operator maintenance

work finalisation activities.

The unit also includes supplying a range of concrete mixes, from relatively dry to increasingly wet mixes, including block-fill, pool mix, topping, slab, footing, kerb and guttering mixes for residential, commercial and civil construction sites.

It applies to concreters working as members of a team with at least a moderate degree of autonomy. They would be expected to complete routine activities without close supervision.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in all states and territories except Tasmania. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm these requirements.

1. Plan and prepare to operate concrete agitator truck.

1.1 Review and clarify task to operate concrete agitator truck.

1.2 Review task specifications and check to make sure they are in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice.

1.3 Review work health and safety (WHS) requirements for the task in accordance with safety plans and policies.

1.4 Analyse site hazards associated with concrete agitator truck operations and use safe operating techniques to minimise risk.

1.5 Review environmental requirements for the task in accordance with environmental plans and legislative requirements.

1.6 Select hand tools and maintenance equipment associated with the particular concreter agitator truck, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.

2. Conduct concrete agitator truck pre-operational checks.

2.1 Fit personal protective equipment (PPE).

2.2 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park and shut-down procedures, including emergency shut-down procedures, in accordance with manufacturer and site-specific requirements.

2.3 Check vehicle controls and functions for serviceability, and rectify or report faults.

2.4 Check agitator controls and functions for serviceability and rectify or report faults.

3. Operate concrete agitator truck.

3.1 Manage engine power to ensure efficiency of concrete agitator truck movements and to minimise damage to engine and gears.

3.2 Coordinate engine power with gear selection ensuring smooth transition and operation within torque range.

3.3 Operate concrete agitator truck in accordance with work instructions and company operating procedures.

3.4 Monitor road and traffic conditions and adjust concrete agitator truck operation as required to ensure safety.

3.5 Bring truck to a halt smoothly, using engine retarder, gears and brakes, and minimising wear and tear on vehicle.

4. Load, transport and discharge concrete.

4.1 Position concrete agitator truck at load and discharge points with a minimum of manoeuvres.

4.2 Load concrete agitator truck with concrete mixes specified for the job, and with volume or weight of load limited to within authorised carrying capacity of agitator.

4.3 Move concrete agitator truck from loading to discharge point safely and smoothly avoiding surge and sway.

4.4 Discharge concrete in accordance with task specifications.

4.5 Monitor and maintain discharge systems, including chutes and adaptors, throughout the operations.

5. Carry out driver maintenance.

5.1 Park concrete agitator truck safely, prepare it for maintenance, and shut down in accordance with manufacturer’s manual and organisational requirements.

5.2 Carry out inspection and faultfinding in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications, and record in accordance with workplace procedures.

5.3 Remove defective parts and replace them safely and effectively in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.

5.4 Carry out regular programmed maintenance tasks in accordance with manufacturers’ and workplace requirements.

6. Clean up after operating concrete agitator truck.

6.1 Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle materials in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes of practice and task requirements.

6.2 Clean, check, maintain and store vehicle, bowl, tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and workplace requirements.
